Not a whole lot to put up at the moment, but I thought I'd start the thread anyway. After reading what Don said in one of his battle reports about getting scenery that all ties in together, I've decided to try it and make a scatter-terrain board based on the campaign, with relevant buildings.

Whilst a bit drab maybe, I'm gonna go for the same type of ground as my IG bases, so they match - that is a grey rocky asteroid look. I'll try and match the scenery to the campaign's likely buildings.

First up - an old and battered pumping station:

Damn, the pics haven't shown the battle damage on the roof, which is quite well detailed. And I better sort that aguila transfer silvering out!

It's a hard-foam cast from Micro Art Studios that a guy on Ebay has got overstocks on (he's called Trolltrader if yer interested) - most of the casts are going back to their original price now but I managed to snaffle a few - this is my first painted one. It was only a tenner with free packaging so can't be bad. They're between £8-£13 at his prices but are about £20+ at the normal whack.

The foam is pretty solid and a plus is it's lightweight, although I reckon any metal miniature of substance will likely chip it if dropped on it (so I'll have to be careful - my middle name....).

A close up of the door. As you can see, I've gone to town practising my weathering. It's probably a bit much - I'm still learning how to use the rust pigments - but they are giving better results now. It's my old mantra: it looks better in the flesh and on a tabletop than the close up pic suggests.

The blue panels on the door were done with a harispray/salt technique that is well known to military modellers apparently. I wanted to try it 'coz that's how I'm gonna paint my valkyrie. Fairly pleased with the blistering effect but it was hard not to make it look each panel as part of a pattern - it's harder than you think to be random!

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0856

I had a go at adding rainstreaks/chemical leakage from the side of the tanks. Looks good from a distance but close up it needs some improving. I think I need to go a little less watered down and also use a thinner brush.

You can also see a bit of the rust pigments and how they've caked well onto the piping.

Just thought - not put it next to a figure so you have no idea of scale! Ah well, you'll have to wait till we have a battle report! An IG trooper probably comes to the top blue panel on the front door. If that helps. Which I don't think it does.

I've done up these craters as well:

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0865

They're resin from Ironclad Miniatures. They only cost about a fiver for the lot, so great value and really well made, so I was pleased with them.

They're painted as fresh muddy bomb holes rather than like meteorite craters for a number of reasons: (a) I want a bit of colour on the battle field and not all grey rocks, (b) I really want to make a small WWI board at some point in the far future and (c) GW and Pegasus do really nice natural looking craters so I'll be using them for the drab rocky variety.

I also think that ordnance should leave a crater when used. Be fun to do that as a rule so the survivors from a big gun blast could use the crater as cover then!

I've also made use of those 4 spare tank traps I bought from ironclad (see my IG plog) and made a small bit of cover in the same way I did with the one on my heavy weapons base.

Hopefully more to come soon!

Cool, I like em! Hopefully this ridiculous workload of mine will finish in the next few weeks and I'll be able to get back into painting Smile I feel like a right slacker!

Yeah you slacker!

Well, the aim is to try and get a board and scenery all done in a unified way, so we're not playing on a board that looks like a cool moonscape with a tudor style beamed house in the corner!

Should have enough done by the next meet up

A quick shot of a couple of craters I got off ebay for £4:

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0983

They were in a terrible mess when I got them - they had a heavy bolter heavily glued onto them and were sprayed a metallic silver....

Took a while as I hadn't realised till i got them that there is a flat lip skirting the whole edge. Put some basing sand on it to try and cover it a little bit.

Need to get a few more yet.

Also been working on three objective markers. Just finished one and will pop the other two up when they're finished:

It could be that an officer that has been given the 'luxury' of a grave by his men had secret orders on him, or that the tomb marks a hero of the Imperium that achieved feats of renown - the Imperium want to recover the body to use as a holy relic and fortify the resolve of Imperial forces. Other armies naturally want to deny this.

Those craters look pretty good. The skirting on the base of them doesn't look out of place either. If you do your board a similar colour then they would blend in nicely.

Loving the objective marker - looks ace.

This bloody board will be the death of me:

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0971-1

First half there.

Really not happy with it. You can see the slight curvature of the MDF, although that isn't so bad - it should hopefully settle down if I lie it flat.

Also not satisfied with the surface - the sand has dried with what look like brush marks on it. It's not, but I think it was where i ran my fingers over it to get the loose sand off after sticking. Anyway, it just doesn't look right to me. Still it will have to do. Meh.

Some close ups - looks better close up but it's the overall impact that I'm not happy with:

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0975-1

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0974-1

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0972-1

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0973-1

The highlighting follows where the sand has clumped to make ridges.

You can see some of the 'ploughing' lines that I was on about better on this pic:

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0976-1

Ah well - too late to change now!

I think it looks really good. The fact that there are 'ploughing lines' makes it looks like a windswept lunar surface.

Spose it could be where vehicles have crossed.

Looks ok to me. So long as its not so bumpy as to topple figures over I wouldnt worry about it. My extensive travels through space have shown me that space dust never blows even anyway.

Looks a bit like you ran a wall tile adhesive spreader through it at the start, the plastic ones with the chunky squared edge if you have ever used one?

I like it though, certainly don't go back and try and change it, I wish I had made mine more heavily textured like yours tbh

Meh, dunno - just wanted it better than that. The textures aren't so bumpy or raised as to be a problem. I know what you mean about a grout/tile card thingy but I didn't use one. only thing I could think was that it was my fingers - brushed it to get the sand off and must have moved the undried glue.

Not sure about the colours either the black basecoat might be a bit too much contrast on the eyes.

I'll stop being a whiner now.

Well, a bit of an update to my moaning about the board! Bought a £5 spray of matt grey car body primer from Halfords last week and gave the board a once over.

I gave it a light spray with random patches of the old board colour (the black) still showing here and there:

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0771_zps49zkebyx

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0772_zpsi60153cg

40k Scenery (and hopefully a board in the near future!) DSC_0773_zps48mbrett

Gotta say, it's only a minor change but I'm really pleased with how it looks now. It's a lot more subtle, not as busy on the eye, the way it used to look (see above in this thread!) and hides the scrape lines I was moaning about. It also picks out the detail of the texture nicely.

I think when I get round to it I will add a very, very light drybrush of a lighter grey or even a white to pick out some texture a bit better.

Been looking at spray paints and a lot of them seem to be semi-gloss...

Is the primer a bit powdery? i.e. will it sort of brush off or is it pretty tough? I was thinking of getting black, brown and grey and really giving the board a good update

I used THIS from Halfords and it seems to have worked fine. They had a 'two cans for a tenner' offer on. They do a few colours too.

Didn't notice any problems with the primer coming off when we played, did you Dan?

I think because it's for cars (like that Hycote spray in your link), it's oil based and sticks a lot better. And if you base with a primer, the other colours should adhere pretty well to it. If yer worried, I spose you could always seal it all over with a matt varnish spray?

Also, it's not as cheap as that Amazon stuff, but Halfords is only over the road for you, so no P&P or waiting! It does mean you need to leave the house though.....
