Time to start up a fresh painting log!

Tons of new figures to paint and tons of old figures to touch-up, repair and re-base - I'm hoping this will make the force unified as currently its a bit of a mix of styles spanning 20 odd years...

First up a new unit!

White lions, utlimately 24 strong but I have 15 painted and just needing basing so far




These are my first high elves using the new paints and the first thing I have found is that the new white is much more 'brilliant' white than the old - that and possibly the white on some of my older stuff has just aged....

I'm quite happy with the style, bold enough to be punchy on the tabletop but not taking an age to paint

I basically base coated all the colours then applied Earthshade Aggrax [wash] to the cloaks, feet, flesh and then Nuln Oil [wash] everywhere else. I built up the white in 3-4 layers of watered down Ceramite White [base] over the top of foundation grey which I tried to leave in creases to create some shadow. Simple drybrushing for the rest

Wow, great stuff. I really really like them - I was unsure as to the slight 'cartoony' feel of the HE White Lions, but they look nice and crisp with your paint job. Depressing me at my lack of stuff done!

Thoughts on the banner to go for?


And I've noticed that about the new Citadel stuff - it's very very white. I use the ceramite white (or whatever it's called) and TBH, I found it a bit thick and gloopy (yeah, I know it's from the base range).

Ah maybe the Ceramite White paint is a bit gloopy then, I thought it was just mine! Once watered down its still got brilliant coverage

Update on the White Lions...

Ended up using one of the GW textured paints for the base, with nearly 150 existing bases to redo on top of the stuff I want to paint I was looking for something really fast. I don't think they are as good as sticking sand on and then painting it but it did save me a whole process and doesn't look too bad

The tufts are GW tufts, perhaps a little sparse but I'm tempted to grab some of those flowering ones that gilly has used to add a little colour to the bases. Be interesting to see if you guys think the bases are ok before I do hundreds of em!





Next up, sorting out my second bolt thrower

I think the bases look good, especially in rank.  I think you should pepper some flowers or plants about here and there for a bit of colour.  You don't just have to get flowers, you can green shrubbery tufts too.  The key is not to over do it with too many colours or types I think - you can detract from the impact of the unit.

Like these. You can buy them cheaper getting them directly from silflor.

Bolt Thrower sorted.... keeping it fairly simply, although I might well mount my bolt throwers on chariot bases




Next up, making a start on the 1st unit of Lothern Sea Guard

In the back of my mind I'm also thinking about standards... I'd like to unify the style of the standards right across my army and I'll probably print them, possibly painting over the print...



I'm thinking something like this with the white icon changing depending on the unit

I made a new 2800pt army which was effectively a refinement of my previous army compositions. Although I'm confident its a cracking High Elf army I'm also convinced it might be a tad boring to use (still not as bad as Bretonians ofc)

Core
16 Archers
2 x 28 Spearmen (7 Wide, with all 4 ranks fighting ofc)

Elite
21 Swordsmasters
21 Phoenix Guard
5 Dragon Princes

Heroes
Lvl 2 Mage (High mage)
Battle Standard Bearer
Hero
Hero

Lords
Elf Lord
Lvl 4 Mage (Life or High magic)

With that little lot I am packing numerous magic items in the units for standards and unit champions, including banner of sorcery
Every combat character has at least a 5+ ward save

Each spearmen unit has a mage and combat hero
Phoenix guard have a lord and the Swordsmasters a Hero

I envisaged using the tried and tested rush across the board as fast as possible tactic - even so far as stopping short and inviting a charge onto me - especially the spearmen. The lore of Life should give some much needed survivability in addition to the high mage with the Shield of Saphery (5+ Ward) and casting Drain Magic (+3 Cast difficulty)every turn to thwart all those cheeky 1 dice summon spells. I mentioned to Dan the possibility of taking both mages as High Magic and trying to cast double stacked Drain Magic, it seems rather cheesy tho but is certainly the most effective aggressive magic counter you can use... You could even take 3 level 2 mages - or a host of level 1 mages to ensure that you get several stacked drain magics each turn however that seems to really be cheesing the mechanics somewhat

So although I'm sure tha'ts a reliable army, I'm going to try and make something with more variation, maybe some chariots, bolt thrower and a monster!! At the end of the day I think I would rather opt for a more interesting force that's more challenging to use rather than brute forcing people with 4 hefty blocks of men

Yeah, 4 blocks of troops doesnt give you much fun stuff to play with, but the depressing thing is, it would be bloody effective against vamps at least.

Strange army total - any reason for 2,800 points and not the more usual 3,000?

If you took multiple lower level wizards you would have to get rid of a few heroes though as you would (I presume) be over your 25% limit on heroes. I guess the Vamps could take a few dispel scrolls - or the equivalent.

No idea what the new Vamps book is like, but you may find this useful, especially if you have a lot of bound items...

Don't forget that casting drain magic will also make it successively harder for your mages to cast spells - so casting Drain Magic a second, and especially a third, time will be more difficult.

Think the 2800pts total is because Dons board is not quite 6'X4', its 5.5'X4'? I think. So its a slightly smaller total simply as with the points of everything dropping, you can run out of room. Esp Sam with his Empire.

Only loosely really, I'll stick with the Vanguard of the White Tower theme as the general will usually be a wizard lord

Overall I see it as a skirmishing army, formed from the best trackers/scouts from a much larger force drawn from many regions. Elven politics would probably play a role too, as each faction would want to be represented

As such the force could be quite varied, would include smaller units and usually at least some Swordsmasters from the White Tower itself along with White Lions who I would see as natural scouts

Ultimately my army will be pretty big so I don't think there is a lot of point trying to create one fixed force. It will be very similar to the idea above, with a large selection of troops available and the army chosen from it

New High Elf book now in my possession..... by god, brilliant, simply brilliant (except the flying chariot thing)

Very rough summary of bits you might not know.....

Army Rule
Always strike first (regular rule)
Extra rank for combat and shooting, in addition to any other extra rank rules

New lord choice
Annointed of Asuryan, like a lord Phoenix Guard

New hero choices
Sea Guard Hero
Handmaiden Hero

Core
Archers and Sea Guard are 1pt less
Silver Helms and Reavers

Special
Swordsmasters and White Lions are 2pts less
Lion Chariot 20pts less
Chariot 15pts less
Dragon Princes 1 pt less
Phoenix guard same cost
Shadow Warriors 2 pts less, increase BS to 5

Rare
Phoenix things
Bolt throwers 30pts less (70 each now)
Maiden Guard (WS+BS 5, handweapon, lt armour, bow of avelorn (S4, flaming))

Dragons
Breath rationalised to S4 for all of them
Saves rationalised to 3+
small dragon 5 pts cheaper, -1T
big dragon 20pts more, +1T

Magic
Spells really overhauled
Lore attribute, +1 ward save to you+your unit for every successful cast....
2d6 S4 spell reduced range to 18", but can be cast bigger as 4d6 S4
Flames that kept burning and got stronger no longer get stronger
drain magic is very different, it is an augment on my units or a hex on yours to remove all magical effects - can be cast bigger and removes all magical from all units friend or foe within 18" (now thats drain magic!)

There is an awful lot more...

No, sounds like it is very flexible in how you build an army. SM and WL being cheaper is probably offset by losing rerolls to hit, but still, 2pts cheaper makes them what? Same as Greatswords? They are a lot better than them imo.

Supposed to have a broken banner too thats way op.

When you say removes all magic effects, are we talking buffs, or items etc too?

Oh dear chin. I'm keeping faith though that they're not broken -often when a new army comes out everyone always goes into OP panic and when the dust settles you realise they're not so bad.

Is there a unit cap on swordsmasters or white lions, like there is with black guard?

I cant believe you didn't mention the Loremaster either! That figure and rules sounds awesome. Really like the idea of that one.

Ah yeah, the loremaster who gets the signature spell from every lore....

The broken banner will be the banner of the World Dragon, the unit gets a 2+ Ward save vs 'spells, magic weapons and magical attacks' - so basically forget about fighting them with a character with a magic weapon! The banner also grants stubborn to dragons within 12" (iirc) friend or foe tho. Its 50pts, so any elite unit can take it....

They have a few other very shiny magic items Smile

No cap on Elite units, in fact, the opposite! high elves can take twice as many duplicates as other armies...

With cavalry being moved back into core I can now make a huge, huge force....

wow - surprised they have reduced the points cost of a lot of units. I guess that means people buy more figures. Will probably be a slow creep for all future releases. That means they will be giving zombies away in a few more updates time!

Archer Regiment finally finished!

Its 20 strong, but only 16 are the newer plastic figures, you can see 4 old school elves in the rear rank to bulk them out
